Conductor

Grenville Moore

Grenville was introduced to the pleasures of brass instruments at a primary school in London, beginning with the trumpet at the age of 9. On moving to secondary school he was given the opportunity to learn the French Horn. As this meant that he could miss music lesson, he jumped at the chance. So began many years of toil, heartache and effort. He spent nearly 4 years at the Guildhall School of Music in London and was lucky enough to establish himself as a freelance player and teacher. In 1984, Grenville took a permanent job with the Ulster Orchestra. Over a 20 year period he played with most of the UKs leading orchestras, including the LSO, the RPO, the Liverpool Phil, the Halle, and the RSNO. Whilst in Northern Ireland, Grenville took an interest in Brass Banding and was MD for several bands in the province. He has continued to teach brass students of all abilities and ages for the past 25 years. On returning to England, he decided to hide the horn away in a cupboard and never play it again. However it became quickly apparent that something was missing and he thought he would have a dabble with the cornet. Grenville joined Dobcross Silver Band and found himself as number 2. He was soon offered the chance to play with the world famous Brighouse & Rastrick Band and he enjoyed a couple of years on the solo cornet row with them. A band as busy as Brighouse & Rastrick is hugely demanding, and he decided that he should move over to a local rival; Hepworth who enjoy the same high profile contesting circuit but without the weekly concerts and coach journeys. Since being back in England, Grenville has conducted several bands and when the offer to come back to Dobcross was made, he accepted readily. Grenville is currently head of music at St Georges High School in Salford and lives in Stalybridge and he has three extremely talented youngsters who all play brass instruments.
